France Bolsters Support for LGBTQ+ Refugees with New Asylum Policy In a pivotal move, France has intensified its support for LGBTQ+ refugees, granting an « emergency humanitarian visa » to Azmad, a 26-year-old from Chechnya. This decision comes amid escalating concerns about the persecution of LGBTQ+ individuals in Chechnya, highlighted in a report by Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta, which detailed the imprisonment and torture of gay men in the region. More than 100 individuals have reportedly been detained, with several facing torture and death.

French President Emmanuel Macron, asserting France’s commitment to human rights, has been proactive in addressing these issues. During a recent meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Macron emphasized the necessity of transparency and investigation into these persecutions—a stance Putin has agreed to, following his discussions with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

However, Russian Foreign Affairs Minister Sergei Lavrov remains skeptical, denying any factual basis for these allegations. Despite this, France continues to scrutinize potential asylum cases, determined to offer refuge to those in dire need. This policy not only offers a lifeline to individuals like Azmad but also firmly positions France as a beacon of hope and a leader in human rights advocacy.
